Meet The Optometrist

InSight Optometry & Occupational Therapy is dedicated to ensuring your child's success at school, in sports, and at play.

Dr. Darren Sass, Optometrist

Dr. Darren Sass is InSight’s owner and clinic director. He studied general science at UBC and received his doctorate degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. Throughout his career in optometry he’s had a special interest in children’s eye care, learning-related vision problems, and neuro-developmental optometry.

He is a member of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD), the Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF), the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA), Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) and the BC Association of Optometrists (BCAO). He is licensed to practice in BC and Washington State. When not at the clinic he enjoys digging in the backyard.

Dr. Oliver Chong, Optometrist

Dr. Chong comes originally from Montreal and speaks both French and English, as well as a little Jamaican Patois. He studied at the University of Waterloo in Ontario where he obtained Bachelor of General Science (BSc) and Doctor of Optometry (OD) degrees. Prior to graduating he was invited to do a clinical externship in Hong Kong which included rotations in the Hong Kong Polytechnic Optometry Section, the Hong Kong Society for the Blind General and Low Vision Clinic, and the Prince of Wales Hospital Eye Department.

With two decades of experience in optometry, he is available for comprehensive eye exams, eye health concerns, and emergency eye care.

--Dr. Aman Basi, Optometrist

Dr. Basi received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba before moving to Philadelphia to study optometry. She graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University where she received her Doctor of Optometry degree, a second bachelor’s degree in Vision Science, and an Advanced Retina Certificate. Dr. Basi then studied an additional year as the Pediatric and Vision Therapy Resident at the Southern California College of Optometry. She worked with children and adults with vision challenges including; binocular vision dysfunction, visual information processing disorders, learning related vision problems, traumatic brain injury, and special needs. As Resident, Dr. Basi was also involved in research with the prestigious Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group.

Although Dr. Basi’s training had strong emphasis on pediatric, binocular, and developmental optometry, she enjoys all aspects of her profession. She enjoys working with people of all ages and is careful to present all treatment options, as not all vision problems may be resolved with glasses alone.  

--Soutomi Kundu, Occupational Therapist

Soutomi Kundu proudly joined InSight Optometry and Occupational Therapy in November 2013. Originally from Botswana, Soutomi obtained her honors degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Before moving to Vancouver in 2009, she supported the community of Gaborone, Botswana working in a hospital Occupational Therapy outpatient clinic for two years. Since her pediatric training, Soutomi has been passionate about helping children and has enjoyed working with children who have various physical, developmental and sensory challenges. In both school and clinic settings, she strives to provide clinical services based on functional goals that are meaningful to the client and family. She recently had the privilege of attending the Intensive Mentorship Program about Evaluation, Diagnostic and Treatment of Sensory Processing Disorder with Lucy Jane Miller at the STAR center in Denver. Soutomi is registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC) and the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT). Outside of work, Soutomi enjoys the great outdoors, art, dancing, theatres, exploring culinary flavors and travelling.

Mina Lee Thomas , Occupational Therapist

Mina Lee obtained her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of British Columbia after a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley. Here at InSight, Mina Lee provides pediatric assessments and occupational therapy for children with delayed fine and gross motor skills, coordination and balance issues, mild sensory deficits, and learning and behaviour challenges. She has a great deal of experience working with children as an optometric vision therapist as well.
She is a member of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).

Moira, Office Manager

The friendly smile you see when you arrive belongs to our Office Manager Moira. She oversees our appointment scheduling, reception, pre-testing for examinations, and office administration. She and her husband Tim are the parents of 2 adult children and they volunteer their time with a number of community organizations. In addition to her position at the clinic, Moira teaches ballet from kindergarten to the professional level, drawing on her experience as a professional ballerina in England and Australia. 

Linda, Vision Therapist

Linda enjoys her work as vision therapist, training children and adults to improve vision skills. She draws on her experience in hospital administration, as well as years spent coaching ball and instructing children with developing abilities at a therapeutic horseback riding academy. Away from work, Linda enjoys horseback riding and spending time with her family.


Alicia, Vision Therapist

Alicia brings her interest in child development, special needs and brain injuries to her work as a Vision Therapist. She loves working one on one with people, both young in age and young at heart. Especially significant to her, is helping people make lifelong changes to their vision and quality of life. Outside of work Alicia enjoys spending time with her husband and two young sons, especially during their camping adventures.

--Katrina, Vision Therapist

As a vision therapist, Katrina’s expertise is in helping improve vision skills such as eye movement control, visual thinking, focusing and coordination. She was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia and has a keen interest in human movement, function, and rehabilitation. She draws from her experience in mentorship and coaching youth sports to help as a vision therapist. When not at work, she can be found on the volleyball court or trying new restaurants around the city. 

--Kelsey, Optometric Assistant

As an optometric assistant, Kelsey is trained to provide preliminary vision testing before you see the eye doctor.  She has over 5 years experience in optical dispensing and is expert at making custom adjustments to your eyeglasses to make them feel new again.  Kelsey enjoys helping people choose eyewear that is fashion forward, complements facial shape and is best suited for individual lens prescriptions.  Whether it’s contact lenses, frame selection or optical lenses, educating is an essential part of her job.  Kelsey lives in Langley with her husband and two young children. 

Suzette, Optometric Assistant

Our dispensary chief Suzette has worked in the eye care profession for over 15 years. She earned an Optometry and Nursing degree in the Philippines before coming to Canada.  At InSight, she will help you with lens consultation, frame selection and eyewear dispensing. She is in charge of contact lens fitting and evaluation, as well as training in contact lens care. Suzette speaks English, Filipino, and is able to communicate effectively in Chinese Hokkien.  Away from work, she enjoys the beach, watching movies and quality time with her husband and three kids. 

Lisa, Optometric Assistant

With more than 25 years working in a wide range of medical setting, Lisa has been a large asset to our clinic. She is also a former instructor of the Medical Office Assistant Program at UCFV. In 2006 she took some time off to pursue a career in professional landscaping, for which she is still actively involved. Lisa's greatest joys in life are her son and six year old grandson and she believes that all children, like the best gardens, require continuous encouragement and nurturing to flourish and bloom.

Charlette, Optometric Assistant

Charlette is a certified Optometric Assistant with many years of experience working with Dr. Sass and Dr. Chong in Mission. She also has over 12 years experience as a Veterinary Assistant in the Fraser Valley. Charlette's friendly personality creates a welcome experience for our patients. When not busy working, Charlette is active hiking, snowshoeing and camping.
